Aug 17, 2018 · One thing to keep in mind while drawing Lewis structure is that the Octet Rule can be violated in these three situations; but, we don’t need to think about it each time as it is rare and these exceptions will only occur when necessary. Exception 1: If there is an odd number of valence electrons like 3,5,7, etc.
Ions. Ions have charges [and brackets]. A full octet of electrons (8 dots) is a stable configuration. Oxygen would need 2 more electrons to be stable. Well that is what it does. Takes 2 electrons and becomes stable. It now has a 2- charge. Metal ions are a little different.
Resonance structures. I won't try to draw one here but take for example, CH3CH2COO-. This has two resonance structures but they look the same to me.
